Jaw-dropping conversion rates?
Ask
any marketer about their lead-page conversion rate, and you’re sure to get
wildly different numbers. Most of these numbers will fall right into the 5% to
15% range.
You’ll
have a few folks who’ll shuffle their feet, blush, and quietly admit to 2%
conversion rates. Meanwhile, you got the guys on the other side crowing about
lead-page conversions at 20%, 30% or even more. (We’ve seen as high as 62% on
some campaigns!)
Every
marketer would love those big double-digit conversions, but so many are stuck
in the low single digits.
The good news is that if your lead pages are struggling like an 80-year old woman hauling a log up a hill, there are things you can do to kick up your conversions.
The good news is that if your lead pages are struggling like an 80-year old woman hauling a log up a hill, there are things you can do to kick up your conversions.
Take
a look at these three tips for getting more people joining your list…
Craft “catch ‘em by the collar” copy.
We’ve
done a lot of testing and have discovered that short-form copy tends to work
best on our lead pages. We’re talking a headline and a handful of bullets.
Sometimes we put up a short video too.
Your
mileage may vary, which is why you’ll want to test it out for yourself to see
what your audience responds to the best. But no matter what format you’re
using, you need to make your prospects hearts go all pitter-patter with desire.
How?
It’s all about the benefits, baby.
Your
prospects are thinking, “WIIFM?” (What’s in it for me?)
And
your sales copy better answer that question, and fast. That’s why every word
you write on your sales page should be all about your prospects and what they
get. It doesn’t hurt to make people crazy with curiosity, too.
How do you make people crazy with curiosity?
Easy
– you tell them what benefits they’ll get, but not HOW they get the benefits.
They’ll need to subscribe to your mailing list to find out.
Let me give you an example…
Most
dieters think dieting is miserable because they’re hungry all the time and they
hate exercising. So let’s toss this enticing tidbit in front of them:
“Discover the secrets of losing all the weight
you want without hunger pangs or exercise.”
See
that? They get a benefit (losing weight), but you totally stoke their curiosity
about how they get that benefit. Just add a strong call to action and you’re
good to go. (E.G. “Click here now to find out how you too can shed the fat
fast…”)
Okay,
next point…
Make sure you’re bringing in a targeted
audience.
Truth
time…
A
lot of marketers have crappy conversion rates because they’re driving crappy,
untargeted traffic to their lead page. That’s like trying to feed burgers at a
vegetarian convention – no one is going to gobble it up.
So I don’t care if you’re buying traffic, swapping it or
retargeting it, make sure these visitors want what you’re offering.
If
you’re doing JVs, make sure your partner caters to the same market or, better
yet, the same niche.
If
you’re doing pay per click marketing, then bid on narrow keywords that show you
the prospect is looking for exactly what you’re offering.
If
you’re buying ads, make sure these ads are on sites where your target market
congregates.
And
for the love of Pete (whomever that is), stop purchasing “clicks” and “views”
from sites that won’t share their demographics. That’s like flushing money down
the toilet.
And
finally…
Dazzle ‘em with design.
If
your site looks like a 1st grader put it together, your prospects will run
faster than a rabbit being chased by a hungry coyote.
If
your site looks like it was built five years ago, your visitors will disappear
faster than the pretty assistant who walks into box at a magic show.
Look,
I get it. Maybe you’re on a tight budget and don’t want to hire anyone. Maybe
you’re practicing your web design chops, but you don’t quite have your skills
up to the pro level yet.
But this isn’t a place you want to scrimp. You don’t want to wing
it. You don’t want to put up a crappy page…because you only have one chance
to make a first impression.
You
can hire someone to create the page for you.
Or
you can use this landing page
creation tool to quickly and easily create a polished page. But either way,
just make sure you dazzle your visitors.
